Terry’s introduction to square dancing began in 1967, in Waterloo, Iowa. His calling career began in 1968 at a campout dance. In the fall of 1968 he started lessons for youth and has helped promote youth dancing ever since.
March 1969 was Terry’s first state convention which was hosted in Waterloo. One of Terry’s favorite dance attire accessory is the “State Convention Belt buckle” purchased in Cedar Rapids commemorating the 25th annual State Convention. He was an officer in Northeast Iowa Caller’s association and also joined the Central Iowa Caller’s Association. He also was asked to help teach the Caller’s Clinic under the direction of Merlin Cook.
Terry travels to numerous out-of-town engagements and has given lessons to several clubs. Terry moved to Omaha in 1977 to work. In August of 1977 he married Barbara Betts. Both Terry and Barbara are very active in the square dance world.
Terry volunteered to be editor of the Iowa State Square and Round Dance News and did that for several years. Terry put a lot of time, blood, sweat and TEARS into keeping this wonderful magazine up and running. He was also the person who got the Iowa web up and running for the Iowa Square Dancers. Terry has put a lot of volunteer time into square dancing with the magazine and the web. Terry was instrumental in getting the teen hall reactivated the year that Southwest hosted the Iowa Convention in 2004.
Terry has received his 20 and 30 year pins for attending conventions. Terry has been a member of Southwest Iowa Callers Association, Omaha Caller Association, Nebraska State Callers Association, Callerlab. Terry was previously a member of Northeast Callers Association and Central Iowa Callers Association. Terry’s always thinking of square dancing and promoting.
Terry has attended conventions in Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois, Wisconsin and a few national conventions. Terry and Barbara along with their friends Gary and Nancy Smith went on a square dance cruise one year to the Caribbean with 30 dancers. He is also known for the fun after parties. He also helps call at the Iowa State Fair dances in the summer. Terry received the Caller Hall of Fame in Iowa in 20008 in Waterloo, Iowa at the Iowa State Square and Round Dance Convention. Terry loves calling square dances and Barbara does cue round dances and line dances.
Terry has 2 children, 4 grand children and 3 nieces and 2 nephews. Everyone that knows Terry and Barb knows Lady Girl their dog. Barbara does pet therapy with Lady 3 times or more a month.
Terry currently is employed by Wal-Mart, so if you are in Omaha, you stop in, you will receive a Yellow Rock at Wal-Mart! Yes, Terry makes a great greeter! A lot of dancers stop by and get their yellow Rock!
Other things Terry enjoys doing is: working on the computer, play cards (and winning), golf, camping, Dutch Oven Cooking, going to Blue Jay Basketball games and visiting with family and friends. Terry has been blessed to have met so many people and have “Wonderful friends”.
